My first projects for Tim's DT...I had a blast making these. They're quirky and a bit weird, but quintessentially me. I have to say, my obsession with beeswax continues...and I have a burn on my arm to prove it (darn encaustic iron...lol).
First project: set of 3 large tags, done with stamping & beeswax (with acrylic paint and ink thrown in for good measure in the background). Tim's supplies that I used: several different stamps, distress ink.
Second project: 5x7 canvas board. Tim's supplies used: metal numbers, patterned paper (the boy is cut from the sheet with all the old portraits). I cut out the boy & decided to invent some of his character traits...lol. I did the treatment around the metal letters with molding paste and acrylic paint & glaze. No wax on this one.
Third project: 5x7 canvas board, done with ink and stamping and beeswax. Tim's supplies used: various stamps, distress inks, grey crackle paint, clock is from Tim's patterned paper. The whole colored background is distress ink.
I have to say, I love, love, love to teach. It's an exhilarating experience to be around fellow artists and like-minded souls. I love to share what I do and learn from what they do...so much fun.
I taught for the third time in Barcelona (actually in Gavà, about 30 mins from Barcelona). My good friend Lisa Mitchell lives there and has a delightful studio. I adore Lisa, she's so fabulous. She's supportive and nurturing, and her artistic spirit shines through in everything she does. We have a great time together. She coordinates & translates, and we have a blast!
In Spain we did the Hardware Store Art Journal, and Painted Portraits...so much fun! Students were adventurous and talented, the best type there is. They were patient with my almost non-existent Spanish, and they created wonderful work. So impressive!
In Harrogate, England, I taught 3 days of art journaling--Introduction to Art Journaling, Art Journaling in Layers, and Painted Portraits. I've already mentioned the awesome Dyan...and students in the classes there were wonderful, too. Funny, generous, teeming with talent, and they even bribed me with Curly Wurly's.
Dyan had me make this canvas for her, to hang up in her store...it's about 3 feet long. I used the portrait on it from the class I taught earlier in the day. I started it the day before and set it outside to dry where it promptly was rained on by that notorious British rain. So I had to start over.
When (not if, when) you go to Harrogate, stay here. This is my Carter on the steps of Alexa House, a wonderful Bed & Breakfast. I've stayed here twice now, and it's a warm place where you truly feel at home. Plus, the English breakfast is the best. :) Dave & Sandra are the owners, and I can't thank them enough for their kindness. They went above & beyond the call of duty during my last stay to help me out (Dave chauffeured us to the airport at the last minute so we didn't have to take the train)...plus Sandra taught Carter all about "dippy" eggs (i.e. soft boiled eggs). Can't wait to go back!
After you're all settled into Alexa, you need to go art with Dyan at her store, Art From the Heart. What can I say about Dyan? She's awesome, funny, generous, kind, giving, brilliant, talented, and just plain cool. I adore her. Teaching at her store is amazing...great setting, great students (the best!), you just breathe in the art and feel so fulfilled. Plus her store seriously rocks. Buy one of everything.
So...since I got back from my trip, I have been in a funk. Exhausted (jetlagged, I'm sure), overwhelmed with my "to do" list, stressed with getting the 3 fellas back into school, you know how it goes. I just haven't felt like myself. That's when loneliness and self-doubt creep in...the "I'm not good enough" feelings that are so paralyzing.
So I started finishing up a few things I started before I left...like this sheet of canvas that isn't for an assignment. It just had an ink blot on it. I added some paint, some words here & there.
Then I stood back and looked at the message of it. Be the star you are...be yourself, in other words. And I realized that my subconscious self had written a note to my conscious self.
Just a reminder about this Encaustic Tag book I'm teaching at The Creative Quest this coming Friday evening...I can smell the melted wax already! ;) Contact the store to sign up, and see this link for more details.
I've just been out of the country since July 27th. Had a great week in Barcelona with the fellas, and taught 2 days of workshops. Then headed to Harrogate, England and taught 3 more days. I'm exhausted but feeling inspired and happy. Spending a day in beautiful York, and then heading home on Wednesday!
Here are the fellas walking to the apartment we rented in Barcelona.
Up in the tower at La Sagrada Familia...
Gaudi's Park Guell...
On the steps of the cathedral in Girona...
Loving the fish stalls in the famous Boqueria market...
Amazing view over an amazing city!
When I get home, I'll do a separate post about the awesome art workshops in Barcelona & Harrogate...
